Secondary Progressions

Secondary Progressions equate the cycle of one day to the cycle of one year to study the gradual unfoldment of the individual’s awareness through a primarily internal process of growth and development. Remember that astrology is a symbolic system. Recognizing a correspondence between the period of one rotation of the earth on its axis (one day) and the span of one revolution of the earth around the Sun (one year), secondary progressions investigate the symbolic interconnections that form and dissipate between the positions of planets in those two cycles. These influences are interpreted as an essential part of the individual’s developmental cycle.

To study your secondary progressions, turn to your birth date in an ephemeris. Online, you can go to astro.com and on the home page, left-hand column, select the 3,000 Years Ephemeris, go to the year of your birth and then scroll to the month of your birth. Once you have the ephemeris in front of you, simply look at the positions of the planets on the day you were born and then count one day forward for every year of your life. So, for example, when you were 20 years old, you will read the progressed positions of the planets on the 20th day after your birth.

For the exact positions of planets by secondary progression to today, you can go to astro.com and select Free Horoscopes; enter your birth data; select Extended Chart Selections; under “Please select the type of chart you want” choose “Natal and Progressed Chart”; click on “Click here to show the chart.” You will see your natal chart with the progressed planets noted outside the circle. In the aspect grid below you can read the exact positions of both natal and progressed planets. You can also go to “Additional Tables” at the top of that page for tables showing the aspects between progressed and natal planets.

As homework for next week, first look up your current secondary progressions and write the planets’ positions outside the circle on your natal chart (or print out the chart from astro.com). Look for aspects between progressed planets and your natal position of any planet as well as the Midheaven, Ascendant and North Node. Use an orb of one degree if the progressed planet is approaching the exact aspect, a half degree if it is separating. Consider and discuss how those alignments are likely to affect you at this time in your life.

To go further, turn to the ephemeris and trace the movement of the planets day by day for each year of your life since your birth. Note particularly when progressed planets changed sign, went retrograde or direct, formed an aspect to your natal planets, touched the Midheaven or Ascendant, or moved from one house to another.
